The Interdisciplinary Heart Surgery Center
At the Chaim Sheba Medical Center
The largest in Israel and a global leader
The Heart Surgery Center at the Sheba Medical Center, at Tel Hashomer, is one of the most advanced in the world. Cardiology treatment has been undergoing a significant, much appreciated, transformation in the way it is delivered to patients. Until recently, heart patients were divided into case specific treatments by a either a cardiologist or recommended for intervention by a surgeon.
Current technology enables "crossing of disciplines", i.e. concurrent treatment of the heart patient by both the cardiologist and the heart surgeon.
The Adult Heart Surgery Center conducts routine bypass and valve replacement surgery, however, it also provides heart valve surgery using the "minimally invasive" approach. In these procedures, conducted only at Sheba, heart valves are repaired or replaced through a very small incision on the side of the chest without need for a long central chest incision. . The cosmetic result attained by this procedure, and the post-surgery recovery rate constitute a significant improvement in comparison to the more routine surgery.
The Center's staff numbers more than 120 physicians, registered nurses, paramedical personnel, and administrative staff.
A case study: A patient with multiple coronary artery disease; Until now the patient would have been treated with angioplasty and/or stents or with major bypass surgery which involves opening the chest. Today, in one procedure, using the minimally invasive approach, a bypass can be performed and stents can be inserted on the appropriate arteries. In this manner, the patient can benefit from a bypass surgery on the aorta (LAD) and insertion of stents in other arteries, all by use of a very non-invasive approach.
The patient would enjoy a highly efficient treatment based on cooperation between the heart surgeon and electro-physiologist, which dramatically improves success rates and the patient's quality of life. Furthermore, the new method reduces the patient's exposure to x-rays.
This cooperative treatment approach can be implemented in all areas of cardiology;
valve repair and replacement, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation, to name a few.
The Sheba Medical Center established a Heart Center that is specifically designed to implement this approach. In addition to using new technologies, the Center also has a hybrid Operations Room (OR) for heart surgery, angioplasty and electrophysiology, the only such OR in Israel. It is among very few such rooms worldwide that allows this range of procedures to be conducted.
