The Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit is a multidisciplinary service focusing on respiratory and dermatologic allergic diseases. Our main activities are devoted to clinical evaluation and treatment of a variety of allergic and immunologic disorders. As with all units at Sheba Medical Center, we follow the philosophy of holistic care and collaborate with the Dermatology, Pulmonary Medicine, Pediatric and ENT Departments.
We offer a wide range of diagnostic services and techniques:
- Review of patient history, physical and clinical evaluation by a specialist
- Seasonal Rhinitis (Hay fever) and chronic (perennial) allergic Rhinitis
- Recurrent Sinusitis, Nasal Polyposis (including aspirin sensitivity)
- Allergic and non-allergic Asthma
- Evaluation of food allergy
- Anaphylactic reactions due to insect stings (bee, hornet)
- Chronic Urticaria and Angioedema
- Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) and allergic-contact dermatitis
- Drug Hypersensitivity reactions
- Immundeficiency conditions (hereditary, acquired)
- Occupational Diseases (focusing on pulmonary and allergic skin reactions)
In the areas of diagnostic techniques, we conduct skin testing, patch tests, laboratory evaluation, pulmonary function tests (including Metacholine, exercise and allergen challenges), Rhinomanometry, open and double- blind food challenges etc.
Our clinic provides immunization treatments to patients with Hay Fever, chronic Rhinits, allergic Asthma and Anaphylaxis from insect stings (Pure-Venom Immunotherapy Extracts). AllIimmunotherapy treatments are supervised by a professional nursing staff with state-of-the-art standardized, FDA approved allergens.
We also provide specialized treatments in a day care setting for:
- Intravenous Immunoglobulins (IVIg) for primary Immunodeficiencies
- Drug challenge (i.e. Asprin and NSAID's) and Food challenge
- Drug desensitization protocols (i.e. Insulin, Penicillin, Aspirin, Chemotherapeutic agents)
- Supervised completion of immunization programs (i.e. for patients with egg sensitivity)
Our inpatient consultation services include the conditions of acute asthma, anaphylaxis, angioedema, adverse food and drug reactions, drug allergies, and occupational diseases specific to the medical staff (i.e. Latex sensitivity).
The Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit houses the Pulmonary and Environmental Allergy Laboratory. The laboratory is involved in the following:
- Total IgE and Allergen-specific IgE (pollens, dust, occupation, foods)
- Specific IgG (Precipitins for Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis and Aspergillosis-ABPA)
- Dust Analysis- extraction of Mite, Cockroach, Mold Allergens from house dust
- Continine level in the sputum and blood for active and passive smoke exposure
- Evaluation of Cellular Immunity (CMI)

Director - Dr. Avner Reshef
Dr. Reshef, born in 1948, graduated in 1977 from the Sackler School of Medicine at the Tel Aviv University. He specialized in Internal Medicine from 1978-84.
From 1984 to 1986 he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Immunology at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore.
He is the director of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit at Sheba since 1990. His research fields are:
- Mast cell differentiation.
- Mast cell /Basophil surface markers of activation.
- Immediate & late allergic skin response.
- Occupational lung disease in Mushroom growers.
- Genetic studies in allergic and Ethiopian Jews in Israel.
- House dust allergens and respiratory allergies.
- Allergic occupational respiratory disease in office workers.
