The Department of Internal Medicine C at the Sheba Medical Center is a clinically active, academically oriented general medical department. Our largest patient population is the elderly who suffer from chronic maladies such as cardiovascular diseases, Cancer, and acute infectious diseases. We provide these patients with further diagnostic evaluation or medical treatment for acute exacerbation of their basic disease. Our other primary patient groups are children with acute infectious diseases and patients with unusual rheumatic or contagious diseases.
In addition to our general inpatient services, we have two specialties. First, we specialize in the treatment of tropical diseases imported to Israel by tourists from Africa or Southeast Asia. Secondly, we cooperate with the Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation and admit bone marrow transplanted patients with variable complications necessitating hospitalization.
We also have a laboratory engaged in the investigation of the preclinical; Pharmacotherapy of Cancer. Our laboratory's current focus is the development of novel drug combinations for the induction of apoptosis (i.e., active, suicide-like death) in resistant Breast Cancer cells. The goal of these studies is to improve our ability to eradicate cancer cells without the need for large amounts of Chemotherapy.
