In addition to providing inpatient services to the general patient population, Department of Internal Medicine E specializes in three areas. Our Director Prof. Farfel and Dr. Mayan are certified Clinical Pharmacologists and conduct basic and clinical pharmacology research. Dr. Pauzner, a Rheumatologist, conducts a busy SLE - Vasculitis Clinic. Dr. Mouallem has various fields of interest, mainly infectious disease and Hematology. The ward has a special interest in General Metabolism and Mineral Metabolism.
The Laboratory of Biochemical Pharmacology is affiliated with our Department and performs biochemical and genetic research in the areas of G-Protein diseases. Recently, the laboratory began an investigation of the molecular basis of a monogenic form of Hypertension, namely Pseudohypoaldosteronism Type II (PHA II).

Director - Prof. Zvi Farfel
Prof. Farfel was born in Russia in 1945 and immigrated to Israel in 1949. He is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the Sackler School of Medicine of Tel Aviv University. He graduated from the Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Medicine in Jerusalem (1968), was an intern and resident in the Sheba Medical Center, and did his fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology in the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco (1978-80). He has spent many short sabbaticals in UCSF since. These involve Prolonged Collaborative Biochemical – Genetic research in the field of G-Proteins and the disease Pseudohypoparathyroidism. Prof. Farfel has been the director of the department since 1987. Currently his research interests include investigation of the molecular basis of monogenic forms of Hypertension Pseudohypoaldosteronism Type II. |
