The Institute of Pulmonology, Physiology and Exercise deals with Chest Disease, Asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Lung Cancer, Tuberculosis, Interstitial Lung Diseases, Pulmonary Hypertension and other rare lung diseases such as Alveolar Proteinosis, Occupational and Allergic Lung Diseases and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center.
Through our many outpatient services we strive to avoid unnecessary hospitalization and to keep patients with their families. At the frontline of this strategy is educating the patients on their care and treatment. We have a day care facility that provides patient guidance for using inhalers, oxygen, IV and Inhaled Drug Therapy, such as Methyl-Prednisolone, Cyclophosphamide, Prostacyclines, IVIG, and Interferon Gamma. Special sessions are dedicated for evaluation and treatment for patients with Pulmonary Hypertension, Alveolar Proteinosis and Exercise Intolerance (Dyspnea). Our Ventilatory Support Clinic (BiPAP) has a day care center for adjusting and instructing patients in proper use of ventilators and masks.
Our outpatient services help patients through every stage of their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. We have specialty-designed programs and facilities to help patients recovering from lung disease or a lung transplant to quit smoking and begin the rehabilitation process through aerobic and respiratory muscle training.
We also have three specialty laboratories. The Lung Function and Physiology Laboratory performs respiratory muscle function tests, respiratory control tests and HAHST (High Altitude Hydroxic Stimulation). The Cellular and Molecular Biology Laboratory uses micro-array technology to study Lung Cancer and training effect on muscles. Our Exercise Laboratory has two state-of-the art breath-by-breath exercise systems and a portable system for field studies for the evaluation of oxygen consumption, the anaerobic threshold and exercise prescription in patients with heart, lung and metabolic diseases. These are used by top athletes and the general public.
