The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care is part of the Surgery Division and composed of two anesthesia departments (A and B), post-anesthesia care unit, general intensive care unit, acute and chronic pain service, pediatric sedation service, and a preoperative clinic.
The main operating room suite, which is currently undergoing extensive modernization, includes 16 operating rooms that are connected to the hospital intranet, internet, digital X-Ray terminals and remote laboratory access. Each anesthesia station is equipped with an automated record-keeper (Datex, Finland or iMDsoft, Israel), with a current database of more than 60,000 anesthesia records including all physiological data. In addition, point-of-care information is available at all times in the operating room and Intensive Care Unit (ICU), provided by the On-Line Electronic Help (OLEH) system for anesthesiologists, developed by our department in association with the European Society of Anaesthesiologists.
The department provides services at 41 locations throughout the hospital. These include the Ambulatory Surgery Center, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Complex (including a very busy service providing analgesia for labor), the Ophthalmology Pavilion, the Radiology, Dental Clinic (high-risk pediatric dental procedures), Psychiatry (ECT) and three ambulances.
The department is in charge of a 15-bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and on the same operating room level, a new 16-bed state-of-the- art general (medical-surgical) ICU, which is equipped with a patient data management system (iMDsoft, Israel). All physiological invasive and non-invasive monitor parameters, mechanical ventilators and drug infusers are networked to the system. Medical and nursing documentation is directly entered into the computer, providing a paperless environment, with rapid access to patient information.
Our pain service includes a busy clinic for chronic pain, which provides invasive pain procedures including unique procedures done under our interventional MRI.
An in-patient acute pain service provides state-of-the-art analgesia to postoperative patients. Our pediatric pain service includes sedation service for diagnostic procedures, as well as anesthesia for pediatric ambulatory Hemato-Oncological patients.
We are affiliated with the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University and have an active academic schedule, comprised of two conferences per week, a monthly journal club, residents meetings, an anesthesia forum (4 per academic semester), and continuing medical education.
