The Department of Cardiac Surgery is one of the more versatile heart surgery services in Israel. Apart from our main workload of adult heart surgery, we operate a busy pediatric surgery unit, a heart transplantation unit, a National Homograft Bank, an organ perfusion and ECMO (artificial lung) unit, and a post open-heart especially dedicated ICU.
Our most common procedure is Coronary by-pass surgery and with about 70% of the patients urgent or emergent, arterial revascularization predominates.
We are a leader in heart valve repairs. Apart from the common cases of mitral reconstruction (approximately 300 by now), we have significant experience in aortic valve repairs and are leading the way in employing the only department in Israel which employs the thorascopic assisted open-heart surgery, the "Heartport" system and similarly less invasive open heart systems, which enable us to perform a proper open heart operation through a small (5-8 cm) incision below the right breast. This procedure results in a nearly invisible incision, which is more appealing esthetically and is a safer surgical technique for extremely sick patients. We also are applying the approach to children and young adults for correction of congenital cardiac malformation with better esthetic results. This technique is the first step towards true robotic surgery.
We are the leading department in Israel in Aortic Aneurysm surgery with database approximately 400 aortic operations, with sub-groups of a large and highly successful series of Acute Aortic dissection, Aortic root repair (more than 70), total aortic arch replacements, and recently we embarked on the newly developed system of Aortic stent-grafts, in which we succeeded to treat big aneurysm of the descending aorta without Thoracotomies.
Our Heart Transplantation Unit and its outpatient clinic for transplantation candidates and post transplant patients is the biggest in Israel and the only one of its kind in Israel with a functioning mechanical Left Ventricle Assist Device Service (the LVAD).
Our Pediatric Cardiac Surgery program is one of the most experienced in the country, repairing congenital heart anomalies in patients of any age.
We have the largest series of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome operations in Israel, as well as arterial switch operations, Tetrads, Canals and Rosses.
The department is affiliated with the Sackler Medical School at Tel Aviv University Medical students and graduate students receive training and thesis supervision through our department.
