Patients with cataract related visual problems are referred to the service by the community eye doctor where a careful examination is performed in order to evaluate the eye's condition. The presurgical evaluation includes an Auto-Keratorefractometry, a biometry to determine the power of the Intra Ocular Lens and a B Scan ultrasonic examination in cases of mature Cataracts. In borderline cases the optometrist in the service sees the patient. If further ocular problems are encountered then the appropriate specialist examines the patients.
Yag Capsulotomies are performed in the cataract clinic in the presence of posterior capsule opacification following Cataract extraction.
Patients with ocular complications following unsuccessful or complicated cataract surgeries are referred to the clinic for second opinion. After careful examination, a decision is made whether to follow up the patient with medical treatment or to re-operate and reconstruct the anterior segment.
Patients are seen one week after Cataract surgery. If the follow up is uneventful they are dismissed and sent back to the ophthalmologist in the community.
The Cataract Clinic is one of the busiest in the Institute. Every week almost two hundred patients are seen and about forty Cataract procedures are performed in the operating rooms.
