The Sam Rothberg Glaucoma Center (SRGC) was established in 1994 in the Goldschleger Eye Institute. This was made possible by the generous contribution and support of Mr. Sam Rothberg from the USA and other sources.

Activities of the SRGC include:

• An out-reach program for early diagnosis of Glaucoma in the community. Two Mobile Unit Systems are used (in SRGC and Sharei Zedek Hospital, Jerusalem) to screen people in the working place, villages, absorption centers and shopping malls, for Glaucoma and risk factors associated with this disease.
• The Glaucoma Clinic is devoted to the care of Glaucoma patients referred from all over the country. There are about 6500 visits per year, with modern and sophisticated tools for diagnosis as well as surgical and laser therapy when necessary.
• We have also established a special Ocular Imaging Unit for more sophisticated and accurate diagnosis. Novel technologies such as Confocal Tomographic Angiography with ICG and Laser Doppler Flowmetry are used for evaluation of Retinal and Optic Nerve Head Blood Supply. Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph (HRT) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT-3) are used for assessing the 3-dimensional and cross section structure of the retina and optic nerve head.
• Functional evaluation of our Glaucoma patients is routinely performed, using 2 units of Humphrey Computerized Visual Field Analyzers, one manual Goldman Perimeter and one novel Frequency Doubling Perimeter.
• Clinical Research is very active in SRGC. Collaboration with major global pharmaceutical companies produces numerous multi-center studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of new Glaucoma medications. New developments in the field of laser therapy for Glaucoma and improved technologies and methodologies for Glaucoma surgery are the main topics of our clinical research program.
• The new Molecular Biology of Glaucoma Laboratory was recently erected, devoted to Glaucoma basic research. Probing into the molecular mechanisms of Glaucoma and especially focusing on the process of Apoptosis (programmed cell death) of Retinal Ganglion Cells are the cornerstones of our activities in the laboratory.
