Bridging the fields of Ophthalmology and Neurology, the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service provides diagnostic services and treatments for patients with neurological and general systemic diseases that affect vision and eye movements.
We evaluate and treats patients with:
- Vision loss from optic nerve disease such as Ischemic Optic Neuropathy, Optic Neuritis and other congenital or acquired optic nerve problems
- Visual fields defects
- Double vision.
- Pupillary abnormalities
- Abnormal eye movements (Ophthalmoparesis or Nystagmus)
- Orbital abnormalities and disease.
- Intracranial lesions affecting the visual pathway and Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.
- Central nervous system disorders such as stroke which affect the visual system
Patients with poorly defined visual symptoms or patients with persistent ocular problems, which remain despite previous Ophthalmic and Neurological evaluation, are candidates for Neuro-Ophthalmology evaluation.
Close collaborative efforts with the Interventional Neurovascular, Neurology, Neurosurgical and Hemato-oncology Services have been established to create multidisciplinary teams to manage complex neuro-ophthalmologic problems. As well as collaboration with other services of the Ophthalmology Department such as Glaucoma, Oculoplastics and Retina services.
Following meticulous clinical evaluation, patients are treated with medical treatment (Steroids, Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors etc'), surgical treatment (neurosurgery or orbital surgery) or regular follow-up.
