The Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus offers diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of eye diseases and vision problems in children and adolescents including adults suffering from Strabismus. The program provides complete ophthalmic care including diagnosis and treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity, other blinding retinal disorders, correction of refractive errors, evaluation and treatment of Amblyopia (known as "lazy eye"), Strabismus, Congenital Cataracts, Infantile Glaucoma, Trauma, and Tear Duct problems, in addition to being a referral clinic for all children treated in other eye clinics in the Ophthalmology Department and primary consultation to all departments and clinics in the hospital. The unit is also a tertiary referral center for other pediatric ophthalmology clinics in Israel.
The clinic provides 5000 visits annually and performs 200 strabismus and childhood cataract surgeries a year in addition to follow-up of patients under anesthesia or sedation when warranted. All strabismus surgery is performed on adjustable sutures for adults. The clinic also performs Botox injection for Blepharospasm and Strabismus in indicated cases.
Clinical research is also active in the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Unit, which includes study of retinopathy of prematurity, refractive and optical outcomes for congenital cataracts using intraocular lens implantation, comparison of different pressure controlling techniques and medications for Congenital Glaucoma, outcome of Amblyopia treatment and Strabismus surgery using adjustable and conventional sutures, new modes for probing and irrigation of the lacrimal system and the study of Shaken Baby Syndrome both in babies and animal models. |
