The General Intensive Care Department at Sheba Medical Center is now located in its newly renovated facility equipped with the latest technologies to provide optimal care to the hospital's most critically ill patients. We deal with approximately 600 admissions per year, each admission averages a 7-day stay. Patients are admitted from all the different units of the hospital. Trauma patients, post-operative patients, as well as severely ill medical patients with Sepsis, ARDS, and Pneumonia are admitted to the ICU when the requirement for medical care exceeds the capabilities of the regular wards.
The new ICU is a 16-bed ward, comprised of four isolation rooms and 12 beds in an open bay type of unit. Each bed is equipped with a monitor, ventilator, and various monitoring and therapeutic equipment.
We perform sophisticated ventilatory management, including use of inhaled NO when necessary, high frequency jet ventilation, and monitoring of extravascular lung water level.
We have computerized systems for drug dispensing and for storing and dispensing valuable disposable equipment.
The ICU is part of the Department of Anesthesiology and is staffed by anesthesiologists and physicians on rotation from the various surgical and medical specialties. We also run the Respiratory Therapy Department of the hospital.
The nurses on staff are all registered nurses with academic degrees. All of the ICU nurses undergo specialized training in ICU nursing. We also have a part time social worker as well as a physiotherapist on staff.
We are engaged in research on innovative monitoring techniques-particularly regarding the interaction of cardiovascular and respiratory systems-and research on nutrition for critically ill patient and pressure sores.
