The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, tumors and defects involving the bone and soft tissues of the mouth, jaws and facial structures.
The department's staff consists of an able team of senior surgeons, trained surgeons, nurses and administrative staff backed by the full diagnostic and treatment resources of the Sheba Medical Center.
We are dedicated to providing the highest quality service to the public with emphasis on professional competence, up-to-date practice and academic excellence.
We are actively involved in the following fields:
- Dent-alveolar surgery: Teeth extractions, surgical extractions, apicectomies, surgical exposure of unerupted teeth, soft and hard tissue biopsies, treatment of jaw cysts, and dental implants.
- Orthognatic surgery: Surgical correction of skeletal deformities of the oral and maxillofacial region.
- Cleft lip/palate and Craniofacial surgery: Management of patients with congenital defects.
- Benign and malignant tumors of the jaws and related structures: Diagnosis, treatment, reconstruction and follow-up.
- Trauma surgery: Comprehensive management of Trauma to the soft and hard structures of the facial tissues.
- Dental implants and bone regeneration for restoring missing teeth in the jawbones.
- Facial rehabilitation of deficient parts by means of obturators and other devices.
- Surgical reconstruction of soft tissues and/or bony elements lost after tumor surgery or Trauma.
- Management of Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders and facial pain.
- Diagnosis and management of conditions involving the oral mucosa and salivary glands.
- Management of dentoalveolar and maxillofacial infections.
The Oral and Maxillofacial In-Patient Ward has 9 beds for adult patients requiring admission. Children under the age of 16 years are admitted to the children's ward.
- The Oral and Maxillofacial Outpatient Clinic provides the following clinical services:
- Clinic for patients with head and neck tumors (Oncology Clinic): The consultation
- Clinic for patients with head and neck tumors includes participants from the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Ear Nose and Throat Surgery and Oncology.
- Clinic for patients with congenital, developmental and posttraumatic facial deformities (Orthognathic Surgery): The consultation takes place with participation of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Orthodontic Departments.
- Laser Clinic: Biopsy and excision of benign and premalignant lesions of the oral cavity by surgical laser.
- Clinic for Dental Implants and Bone Regeneration.
- Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Clinic: Diagnosis and treatment of TMJ dysfunction and facial pain by means of Medical Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occlusal night-guards and joint lavage.
- Oral Medicine Clinic: diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the oral mucous membranes and salivary glands.
We also are activity involved in oral and facial rehabilitation. This can take the form of restoration of hard and soft tissue deficiencies of the oral cavity and facial structures by means of prosthetic devices e.g. artificial nose, ear, eye, etc. We do construction of dentures and obturators for patients after soft tissues or bony elements lost in tumor surgery or Trauma. We also provide dental reconstruction for patients who have undergone placement of dental implants in the Oral and Maxillofacial Clinic.
The department is linked with the School of Dental Medicine and Faculty of Medicine of Tel Aviv University and provides ongoing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The department provides a five-year, post-graduate residency and fellowship programs in oral and maxillofacial surgery for five residents. It is a joint department for oral and maxillofacial surgery for the Israeli Defense Forces and civilian patients.

Director - Prof. Shlomo Taicher

Prof. Taicher received his D.M.D. degree in 1973 from the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem and was a fellow in maxillofacial prosthodontics, in Sloan Kettering- Memorial Hospital, New York.
In 1981, he received a specialization certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery and in 1985 a specialization certificate in oral rehabilitation.
In 1980, he was appointed to be the director of maxillofacial prosthodontic unit at the Department of Oral Surgery, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem and in 1985 he became Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer. In 1991 he was also appointed to the position of Head of the Department of Oral Surgery, School of Dental Medicine, Tel Aviv University.
During the years 1985 – 1992 he was the chairman of the Scientific Council of the Israel Dental Association.
In 1996, he was appointed to the rank of associate professor in oral surgery, school of Dental Medicine, Tel Aviv University.
Prof. Taicher has published more than 90 scientific papers in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery and oral rehabilitation.
He is a member of many national and international professional societies, and an invited speaker in many scientific meetings. |
