The mouth can be afflicted by more than 200 diseases, some of which are life threatening.  Cancer of the oral cavity accounts for about 4% of all Cancers in humans.  The high rate of mortality can be reduced only by early diagnosis and early treatment.  Precancerous lesions must be closely observed and followed-up, as they can transform into Cancer; delayed diagnosis reduces the survival rate.

Many systemic and dermatological diseases manifests in the mouth, sometimes even as the first presenting sign.
