The Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the Sheba Medical Center is one of the largest departments in Israel for the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose and throat diseases.
The department deals with the diagnosis and management of diseases of the ears and skull base, sinuses, larynx (vocal cords), oral cavity, and pharynx, as well as structures of the neck and face.
Otolaryngologists diagnose, treat, and manage specialty-specific disorders as well as many primary care problems in both children and adults.
Our staff of 10 Israeli Board Certified staff physicians and 6 residents provide complete care for children and adults for a wide range of diseases medical problems including: Head and Neck Surgery / Oncology, Otology / Neurotology / Skull Base Surgery, facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Laryngology, Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, Airway Reconstruction, Salivary Gland Surgery, surgical treatment of Sleep Disorders, facial Nerve Reconstruction, Pediatric Otolaryngology, and Balance Disorders.
Our department has 18 beds and is and an independent facility with eight examination rooms equipped with state-of-the-art microscopes and endoscopic devices. A special voice clinic is equipped with an Endoscope and Stroboscope and the facial nerve clinic utilizes an EnoG Device.
Eighteen thousand patients are seen in our outpatient clinics and over 2000 surgical procedures are performed annually.
Our department is the country's largest cochlear implant center with over 250 cases performed. Prof. Kronenberg is the inventor of the suprameatal surgical technique for Cochlear Implantation that is gaining wider acclaim in the field.
We specialize in the treatment of patients with cancerous and non-cancerous tumors of the head and neck. We provide this care in conjunction with the Department of Oncology, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up coordinating patient needs. Professional services are provided for the spectrum of disorders and diseases that affect the larynx and voice. This includes all phonosurgical procedures and voice therapy to treat lesions of the Vocal Folds, Vocal-Cord Paralysis, and other neurological problems.
Special Clinics:
Facial Nerve Clinic This outpatient setting clinic provides a wide spectrum of diagnostic modalities including EMG, ENoG, specialized neurologic examination, referral to the different imaging modalities as need to diagnose and evaluate the various pathologies leading to paralysis of the facial nerve, the clinic enjoys the cooperation of the Neurology Department, Physical Therapy Department (facial nerve rehabilitation) in providing medical, surgical and rehabilitation of the facial nerve.
Tinnitus Clinic The topic of tinnitus is a widely discussed medical issue worldwide. A wide scope of evaluation methods is employed to investigate the source of tinnitus in patients with no apparent cause. In addition, noise induced tinnitus is addressed in this clinic and innovative modes of treatment and new modalities are explored and offered to patients suffering from tinnitus. Treatment may involve medication, biofeedback, hypnosis and injection of medical therapeutics through the tympanic membrane directly into the middle ear.
Salivary Gland Salivary Gland Disease may include Neoplasms, Salivary Gland Anatomical Anomalities, Salivary Stones and inflammatory diseases. Investigation of salivary disease is offered through this clinic. Patients may initially be evaluated using rentgenological sialography and endoscopic evaluation and concrement removal through the excretory duct. This form of investigative and therapeutic method is normally performed under local anesthesia. Endoscopic or surgical treatment is performed both under local and general anesthesia.
Voice Clinic Voice disorders are common in the general population at large, however voice professionals are at an increased risk of suffering from voice related disorders. Voice professionals include teachers, business executives, professional singers and all professionals whose employment involves constant use of voice and loud voice abuse. In addition, many disorders of the larynx (voice box) may eventually lead to the presentation of hoarseness. In order to investigate the various diagnoses of hoarseness, the voice clinic provides state of the art diagnostic modalities including stroboscopic evaluation with audio and video analysis to diagnose and treat a wide spectrum of voice disorders.
Cochlear Implant One of the wonders of the 20th - 21st Centuries has been the arrival of the solution to deafness through implantation of a device to repair damaged hearing organs (cochleas), by means of a device called a cochlear implant. Our department is the largest center in Israel for cochlear implantation with experience with over 300 cochlear implant patients. A unique new technique, developed for cochlear implantation in our department for over 150 patients, bypasses the conventional route for cochlear implantation and makes the drilling of the mastoid (skull bone behind the ear) unnecessary. This technological breakthrough changes the life of children, enables them to develop, especially in the educational mainstream of modern life.
Tracheal Clinic There are many diseases that affect the trachea. Our center has vast experience in correcting both congenital anomalities (present since birth), and acquired pathology (resulting from both previous and current surgery). We offer the complete spectrum of diagnostic evaluation, starting with physical evaluation, radiological evaluation (including virtual endoscopy), and surgical evaluation under general anesthesia.
Vestibular Clinic The spectrum of vestibular disorders is immense. The clinic for vestibular disorders provides diagnosis, medical treatment, surgical intervention, and vestibular rehabilitation for patients suffering from Vertigo. Part of the activity of this clinic includes the treatment of Meniere's Disease with transtympanic injections of gentamicin.
In some cases of vestibular disorders no medication or surgery is required and the preferred treatment is vestibular training. This training is performed in our department by Ms. Tamar Herzano, a physiotherapist.
