The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Sheba Medical Center was founded in 1953 by Prof. Leon Borenstein. The department services the patients from throughout the State of Israel as well as those from abroad.
The department provides outpatient services through the outpatient wing of the surgery section. Ambulatory activities include consultation for patients from the community and post-operative follow-ups. Treatments concern scar prevention, biopsies, wound care and debridement. Different consultation programs are available for general consultation, preoperative evaluation, Melanoma and skin tumor evaluation, breast reconstruction, laser treatment, Mohs surgery, burns, congenital malformations, and wound care.
Research Projects Extensive medical and nursing research is conducted in the department, including cooperative research projects with different hospitals on the national and international level. Our medical team takes part actively in international and national congresses. Numerous research articles are published every year in the international literature. Current research projects include scar formation and control, burns and wound healing, tissue engineering, evaluation of novel surgical techniques, spectral imaging techniques for tissue viability, monitoring and recognition (Melanoma).

Director - Prof. Arie Orenstein
Prof. Orenstein, born in 1944, graduated from the Sackler School of Medicine in 1971. Orenstein is board certified in Plastic Surgery (1981), and since 1996 serves as the Director of the Sheba Medical Center Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Burns.
Prof. Orenstein is an internationally recognized expert on the applications of lasers in medicine, and in particular the clinical application of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), an experimental method utilizing light for the cure of Skin Cancer. While working both in Israel and abroad, he pioneered the use of novel laser systems and also contributed to the understanding, at the microscopic level, of the fundamental role of oxygen molecules in PDT.
For 12 yearsProf. Orenstein served as Co-Chairman of the Israel Medical Association and he was the Israeli representative on the board of the World Medical Association for 15 years. Orenstein is a member of numerous professional organizations dealing with the technical and ethical challenges of medicine. |
