Every year dozens of patients are diagnosed and treated for Melanoma.
Melanoma is an aggressive tumor with high mortality. The Melanoma Clinic of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery takes a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of this rampant condition.
When Melanoma is suspects, the patient is assigned a team comprised of plastic surgeons, dermatologists, oncologists, general surgeons, social workers, psychologists and others, if needed. The plastic surgeons and the dermatologists make the diagnosis. A first excision is made by a plastic surgeon, and if needed also a wider excision. The general surgeons, in collaboration with the plastic surgeons, are responsible for the sentinel node or the lymph node excision and for limb perfusion if a decision is taken according to the stage of the Melanoma. The nuclear medicine service locates the sentinel node and maps the metastasis if existing. Every case is discussed in details and a team approach is taken in any decision made.
Early detection of Melanoma is undertaken by advanced non-invasive spectral analysis, serving as an optical biopsy.
