The Microsurgery Unit of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
at Sheba Medical Center was established in 1990. Hundreds of microsurgical procedures have been performed by the microsurgical teem since then, including emergency procedures and elective surgery. Ten years later the unit became the National Microsurgery Unit by the Israeli Ministry of Health.
The unit performs procedures such as replantation of accidentally severed body parts, injuries to peripheral nerves or free tissue transfer procedures to cover extensive wounds sustained in accidents or war are performed on an emergency basis. The elective microvascular procedures include reconstructive surgery following congenital defects, oncological resection or Trauma.
Procedures such as toe to hand transfers, reconstruction of facial, maxillary or mandibular defects, post facial nerve palsy reconstructions, breast reconstructions, complex reconstruction of the extremities are performed routinely on a weekly basis.
Many physicians from other hospitals in Israel and abroad visit our unit as part of their training.
Microsurgical laboratory, which is a part of our init, enables the training of doctors in microsurgical techniques and performing research projects dealing primarily with Microsurgery.
