The Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Sheba Medical Center is dedicated to General Thoracic surgery, and is medically separated from cardiac surgery. The department holds 12 beds, three senior general thoracic surgeons and two residents.
Our team has a wide experience with the entire range of thoracic surgical procedures including: pulmonary, mediastinal, esophageal, chest wall, diaphragmatic and trauma surgery. Over 400 operations are performed annually. Approximately 50% of the operations are performed with video assistance (VATS) including VATS-Lobectomy and VATS in trauma patients. The team has a relatively large and unique experience in the treatment of the tumors of the thymus including hyperthermic intrapleural perfusion of chemotherapy for pleural metastasis and in the surgical treatment of giant sub-sternal goiters of the thyroid. In addition we take care of complicated trauma patients with multiple injuries. Just recently, a young male patient from Cyprus was treated owing to post-traumatic Aorto-esophageal fistula. He suffered from acute, life threatening, bleeding combined with severe mediastinal infection. In a series of complicated operations the Cardio-Thoracic team constructed a new extra anatomic aorta and a "neo-esophagus" formed from a stomach tube replacing the esophagus. Pediatric patients requiring lung and mediastinal surgery, or correction of congenital malformations are treated by the department's team in collaboration with the department of pediatric surgery.
The department is academically affiliated with the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at the Tel Aviv University and receives rotating residents from the Sheba Medical Center and other hospitals for periods of 3-4 months. Wee also accept thoracic surgeon from abroad joins the department for a period of 2-3 months. This program is supported by the Sackler School of Medicine Unit for International Relations. We have already trained surgeons from Columbia, Bulgaria, Poland, Cyprus, Nepal and several Russian republics.
The thoracic team participates in several multidisciplinary research programs dealing with various aspects of general thoracic surgery.
