The Department of Vascular Surgery

The Department of Vascular Surgery at Sheba Medical Center is engaged in clinical activities, research, and educational functions.

The department's clinical activities include the treatment of vascular diseases, including Arterial Occlusive and Aneurysmal Disease, and Venous Insufficiency. State-of-the-art surgical and endovascular procedures, as well as medical therapies are utilized. The Lubinsky Vascular Institute non-invasive laboratory, part of the department, routinely supports the clinical activities. The department operates four outpatient clinics weekly for consultations and follow-ups, as well as a clinic for vascular access.

The department performs surgical and Endovascular procedures (jointly with the Interventional Radiology Section). These procedures include treatment of:

  • Acute and chronic Arterial Occlusion in the upper or lower extremities.
  • Vascular Trauma
  • Aortic Neurysms, including Thoracoabdominal Aneurysms
  • Carotid and other arch vessels with Occlusive and Aneurismal Disease
  • Visceral Artery Occlusive Disease (Renal and Mesenteric Arteries)
  • Vascular access for Hemodialysis
  • Thoracoscopic Upper Dorsal Sympathectomy
  • Venous reconstructive surgery

The department also provides medical therapy in the form of Fibrinolytic Treatment for acute Arterial Occlusions (Native Vessels, Occluded Grafts) and PGI2 (Ilomedin) for Small Vessel Occlusive Disease (Raynaud, Cholesterol Emboli etc).

The Lubinsky Vascular Institute

The Lubinsky Vascular Institute was founded in 1981 thanks to a generous donation by the Lubinsky family. The Institute does pioneering work in the field of non-invasive vascular examination in Israel.

The Institute is part of the Department of Vascular Surgery and is now located in a new and spacious area adjacent to the department. The Institute uses state-of-the-art equipment to obtain information on the blood circulation to various areas of the body without any hazard or discomfort to the patient.

The main tests we performed are:
Blood circulation in the arteries of the limbs –at rest and following exercise.
Flow in the neck arteries supplying the brain.
Venous circulation in the limbs.
Arterial flow to visceral organs.

The procedures employed consist of Arterial Doppler for upper and lower extremities (including treadmill), duplex for Carotid and other Arch Vessels, duplex for Abdominal Aorta, Renal and Mesenteric Arteries, and duplex for Deep Vein Thrombosis in upper and lower extremities. We put an emphasis on a comprehensive assessment of the patient with a detailed medical history, risk factors and physical examination.

Three experienced registered vascular technologists perform the examinations and our specialist vascular surgeons then assess the patients.

The reliable information obtained by these non-invasive studies enables us to assess the presence of a vascular problem and it's degree of severity, to establish indication as to various vascular interventions and to follow up patients either on conservative treatment or following surgery.

The Gottesdiener Vascular Biology Laboratory

The Gottesdiener Vascular Biology Laboratory is part of the department and affiliated with Tel Aviv University.  This is a basic research laboratory to study mechanisms of vascular diseases and is located in the Research Center Lab Building. The Lab is currently studying the following projects:

  • Early and advanced Atherosclerosis (Gene Expression, Vulnerable Plaque)
  • The genesis of Aortic Atherosclerotic and Dissecting Aneurysms
  • Inflammatory vascular diseases (e.g. Buerger’s Disease, Takayasu)
  • Arterial restenosis after surgical and endovascular procedures
  • Ischemia and Angiogenesis (proliferation of new blood vessels)

    Education:
The Department of Vascular Surgery is affiliated with the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. Four team members of our department have academic appointments in Surgery, and are actively involved in research and teaching of graduate and post-graduate students.

     Director -  Prof. Jacob Schneiderman

Prof. Jacob Schneiderman, born in 1945, graduated from the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University in 1972.  From 1979 – 1982 he was a Cardiovascular Fellow at Baylor College of Medicine (with Dr. M. DeBakey), and at the Texas Heart Institute (with Dr. D. Cooley) Houston, Texas. He also took part in Vascular Biology research at Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA (with Dr. D. Loskutoff).

Prof. Schneiderman established the Gottesdiener Vascular Biology Research Laboratory in 1992 and serves as its director.  He has been an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Tel Aviv University since 1996. In 1999, he became the Director of the Department of Vascular Surgery.

He is involved in a wide range of surgical and endovascular procedures (e.g. Aortic Aneurysms, Carotid Occlusive Disease, Visceral and Peripheral Occlusive Disease). He is also actively engaged in and promotes basic and clinical research (Atherosclerosis, Angiogenesis, Gene Therapy and Stent Technologies).

Prof. Schneiderman has published fundamental research manuscripts in top journals (on Atherosclerosis, Aneurysmogenesis, Fibrinolysis and Carotid Stenosis), including participation in clinical and research international meetings.
