The Interventional Radiology Section of The Division of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging at Sheba Medical Center is one of the largest in Israel.
Senior specialists perform all procedures. There is a heterogeneous patient population that includes those who need diagnosis or treatment by guided interventional procedures. Most of the patients are in-house vacular, urological (for Endourology) and oncological patients, as well as Trauma and other emergency-room situations.
Our diagnostic services are mainly for vascular diseases and include vascular occlusions or narrowing in the extremities, neck and abdominal organs, and Aneurysms in Peripheral Arteries and Thoracic or Abdominal Aorta.
All CT guided biopsies for tissue diagnosis from tumors are under the responsibility of the staff.
Therapy We perform a wide range of therapeutic procedures that replace complicated and dangerous surgeries. The procedures are performed with the aide of catheters, balloons, and stents that are selectively introduced into the blood vessels by guided imaging. With this technique it is possible to open or occlude blood vessels, perform dilatations, and retrieve foreign bodies. We use this technique to open occluded or narrowed arteries or veins in every part of the body (legs, arms, neck, chest and abdominal organs) as well as malfunctioning dialysis grafts or fistulas.
We can also occlude Bleeding Arteries, as in Trauma patients, in actively Bleeding Ulcer Disease, and in Lungs, Kidneys or Liver Hemorrhage. Occluding vessels of vascular anomalies, and Symptomatic Uterine Fibroids is also performed.
Direct tumor chemoembolization is performed as well as pre-tumor resection to prevent blood loss.
The highlight of the catheterization technique is the treatment of Arterial Aneurysms. With this technique we insert a stent covered with graft material (stent-graft) to the affected artery (mainly Abdominal and Thoracic Aorta) via small groin incisions, instead of a large thoracic or abdominal surgery to repair the Aneurysm.
We also introduce vena-cava filters to prevent pulmonary emboli, insert different kinds of central venous catheters for long-term intravenous treatments, and percutaneous drain obstructed kidneys, billiary systems and abscesses in all parts of the body.
Equipment We use all the conventional modern imaging modalities in sterile conditions.
There is a dedicated bi-directional angiography suite for all fluoroscopy-guided procedures, equipped with a separate ultrasound machine to be used as needed. We also use the CT for interventional procedures.
Research The Interventional Radiology Section participates in international multi-institutional projects such as the UEROSTAR (for aortic-stent-grafts follow up), clinical trials for new vascular stents and other endovascular devices.
