The Laboratory Division at the Sheba Medical Center consists of 35 laboratories, covering a variety of modern disciplines. Seventeen are central laboratories that function independently, providing medical and research services in the fields of Biochemistry, Hematology, Bacteriology, Pathology, Genetics, among others.
The laboratories are equipped with the latest and most advanced automated technology available for performing routine analyses, research programs and clinical trials.
Our laboratories function under strict external and internal quality regulations. The division is now in the process of obtaining authorization for ISO/FDIS 15189, "Quality Management in the Medical Laboratory."
A computerized information system (AutoLab) is assimilated to optimize activities in the division such as quality control and electronic data distribution.
The division employs 350 professionals and 80 researchers. An average of 8,000,000 sample tests of body fluids and tissues are examined each year for about 1,000 different types of tests.
The division includes tissue banks for Sperm, Bone, Bone Marrow, Eye components, Heart Valve Bank and a Cord Blood Bank.
The division provides the following activities at a national level:
Eighteen labs are Research & Development oriented, dealing with Oncogenetics, Atherosclerosis, Autoimmune Disease, and Pharmacologic Biochemistry. Our research focuses on innovative diagnostic procedures. Novel methodologies are adopted for exploring morbidity and for tailoring therapy. A branched system of cooperation has been developed between the division and academic institutions to promote these functions.
Our major achievements in research and development include:
- Regeneration and healing of Myocardial Infract using tissue engineering in an animal model.
- Conversion of liver tissue to insulin secreting cells as a novel therapeutic strategy for Diabetes.
- Identification of genetic disorders using innovative methods such as Comparative Genomic Hybridization, SKY and Pointal Cloning.
- Immunization of MS patients with attenuated vaccines prepared from autoreactive T Cell lines.
- Targeting disease specific fingerprints in peripheral blood using gene expression via Functional Genomics.
- Development of newly identified functional biomolecules such as Anti VLA -1 and antibodies from viteligo for therapeutic clinical use.
The division offers many special services, including:
- Screening of newborn for Congenital Hypothyroidism and other genetic disorders;
- Measurement of drug levels and toxicicological analyses including narcotics and poisons;
- Assessment of Hypercoagulatity and prevention of thrombotic states using state of the art molecular techniques;
- Molecular screening of familial predisposition to malignances;
- Therapeutic Plasmapheresis and Leukopheresis.
The laboratory division is always moving forward and some of our new initiations include:
- We inaugurated a laboratory for Neurochemistry Metabolic Disorder;
- The Bioinformatics program will incorporate postgraduate student in several disciplines;
- A program to detect minimal residual disease in pediatric Leukemias and adult Cancers has been implemented using Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorter (FACS) and Real time PCR verified RNA expression.
