The Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit evaluates and follows ambulatory and hospitalized pediatric patients with gastroinetestinal, liver and nutritional problems.

The unit performs Endoscopic and other diagnostic procedures:

• Gastroscopy - Endoscopy of the Upper Digestive Tract
• Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy - Endoscopy of the lower part of the large bowel or the entire colon
• Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
• Hydrogen Breath Tests - are used for evaluation of Carbohydrates Malabsorption as well as small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth
• Manometry of the Rectum and the Esophagus
• Electrogastrography - a diagnostic procedure aimed to detect Gastroduodenal Motility disorders
• BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate) - evaluates the basic metabolic needs of patients with nutritional deficits and obese patients.

The unit takes an active part in organizing meetings and seminars on various relevant gastrointestinal subjects, and performs clinical and basic research.

The Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit collaborates with the adult Gastroenterology Unit.  It also works closely with the Nutrition Consultation Service, headed by Mrs. Brigitte Kohavi.

Research projects that are in process include: Probiotics Treatment of CF patients; Fatty Liver in adipose children; Pyridoxin in Crohn's; genetics of Crohn's.

The unit is located in the new ambulatory wing of the Edmond and Lily Safra Children's Hospital. The Endoscopy Unit is located within the Gastroenterology Clinic. The procedures are performed under sedation or general anesthesia (1-2 times/month).

Director - Prof. Yoram Bujanover Prof. Yoram Bujanover graduated from the Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine in 1971.  He was a Fellow in Pediatric Gastroenterology – UCSF, USA between 1976-78.  Between 1985-87 he held a faculty position at the Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, New York, USA. He has held the position of Director of the Department of Pediatrics and Gastroenterology Unit at the Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, from 1999 to the present.  Prof. Bujanover is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine (1993).
