The Department of Pediatric Intensive Care is a multidisciplinary facility, located in the Safra Children's Hospital of the Chaim Sheba Medical Center. We were the first department of its kind in Israel and remain the largest in the state today. We treat patients for polytrauma, sepsis and infection, congenital anomalies, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and respiratory ailments.
We are uniquely designed so that our rooms are located in two circles around a central hall. This design enables central control and management of the entire patient population while separating patients from noise and providing superior infection control.
In addition to regular patient rooms, the department holds a small operating room, an ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) room, two strict isolation rooms, an acute Hemodialysis room, and two Video-EEG electrophysiology rooms.
An integral part of our department is our parent's facility accommodating 8 parents with a sleeping area and adjunct services.
We are a teaching facility serving nursing students from the School of Nursing, Sackler School of Medicine; medical students during their routine pediatric rotations as well as electives; medical school graduates working on their M.D. thesis; and fellows from Israel and abroad (Turkey, China, Thailand, Ghana, India, Palestinian Authority, Nigeria) who are doing a 1-6 month rotation. We also conduct an APLS (Advanced Pediatric Life Support) course four times a year.
We are one of only two active credentialed ECMO programs in Israel, capable of ECMO support for patients of all age groups (neonates, pediatric and adult). We offer ECMO support for the failing heart as well as for extreme respiratory failure, with Veno-Arterial and Veno-Venous ECMO using both the roller head and the centrifugal pump technologies.
We have a 24 hour sleep lab with video-EEG facility that includes continuous real time synchronized monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, saturation, temperature, pH monitoring for reflux evaluation and split screen Video-EEG monitoring. All data is processed at real time, while being recorded for later evaluation. All follow-up has home monitoring service is offered where applicable.
We have one of the most experienced Pediatric Intensive Care Unit transport teams in the country equipped and trained for the unit. Our team provides transport both within the hospital and inter-hospital.
