The efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in improving cognition in mild cognitively impaired people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the age of 65+.
The goal of the trial:
To examine if hyperbaric chamber treatment with high concentration of oxygen and high atmospheric pressure improve cognitive function, increase cerebral blood flow (CBF) and glucose utilization efficiency in the short term and / or the long term.
Trial population:
Men and women aged 65 and over, who are diagnose with type 2 diabetes without dementia or Alzheimer's disease and are functioning normally, but feel that their memory is significantly reduced relative to themselves and their contemporary over the past year
Description:
At the Sheba Medical Center with a collaboration of the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center a trial currently being conduct to examine the effect of Hyperbaric Chamber therapy on the memory and thinking of people with type 2 diabetes and mild cognitive impairment at ages 65+.
Each participant will undergo a three months HBOT therapy workshop (the participant will arrive 5 times a week for a 90-minute visit each time) at the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center.
In addition, each participant will undergo imaging tests that are not included in the routine HMO examinations - MRI and FDG-PET CT, cognitive assessment, and more. These tests will performed at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer.
