Prof. Eli Schwartz, Director of the Center for Geographic Medicine at Sheba Medical Center in Tel-Hashomer Israel, first introduced the field of travel medicine to Israel . 

 

His practice became the recognized center by the Ministry of Health of Israel for tropical and travel diseases. Dr Schwartz is currently serving as the president of the Israeli Society of Parasitology and Tropical Diseases and past president of the Asia-Pacific Travel Health Society. He is a full Professor (clinical)  at the Sacker faculty of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University.

For the past twenty-five years, Dr. Schwartz's professional focus has been in the area of travel and tropical diseases. He has been an active member of the International society of travel medicine (ISTM), since its founding in 1991. Over the years he has served on several of the ISTM Congress Scientific Committees as well as on the board for the Journal of Travel Medicine. Dr. Schwartz is  co-investigator of GeoSentinel, the ISTM-CDC surveillance project of emerging pathogens. He has chaired the ISTM Professional Education Committee and is an active member of the ISTM Examination Committee.

 

Dr. Schwartz has worked extensively in developing countries including the Cambodia Refugee camps, CIWEC Clinic in Kathmandu and  in Ethiopia.  As director of the Israeli Malaria team, he served as a consultant for the governments of Zanzibar, for the United Nations peace keeping troops in Angola and Senegal.

Dr. Schwartz graduated in 1992 from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. His research interests have led to more than 200 publications in the medical literature in the field of travel and tropical medicine. He was a co-editor of the book "Travel Medicine- tales behind the science". (Elsevier 2007). His most recent book, is  "Tropical Diseases in Travelers" (Wiley Blackwell 2009) is the first 'Post-Travel' textbook summarizing what is currently known in various aspects of tropical diseases in travelers.  

 

THE CENTER

The center is recognized as a top leading medical facility, and the largest of its kind in Israel. Our physicians are all certified in travel medicine, with ISTM certificates of knowledge (CTH)..

 

Pre-Travel Consultation:

 

The center maintains a Travelers' Clinic that provides comprehensive health care for children and adults preparing to leave on  brief or extended  overseas trips..

The center offers also consultations to special travel populations such as pregnant women, infants and patients with chronic diseases.

The service includes:

         All travel related immunizations, including: Yellow fever vaccine, Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine (TBE) and Japanese encephalitis vaccine.

         Malaria prevention and Malaria Chemoprophylaxis

         High Altitude and Acute Mountain Sickness prevention

         Education about disease risks and prevention

         Information about where to seek medical advice while abroad

 

Post-Travel Consultation:  

  • The center is recognized as the national center for tropical diseases.
  • The center offers post travel care, both for ambulatory consultation and  in- patient care.
