Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Laboratory Facility
The BSL3 facility at Sheba enables the study of pathogens (disease-causing agents) that pose a risk to public health. The facility’s laboratories, one of the few in Israel, are available to both Sheba and external researchers, and the facility is approved by the Ministry of Health.
In 2023, the Sheba Laboratories Department opened a new facility with three BSL3-standard laboratories. This was part of efforts to apply lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for future outbreaks. The facility, managed by Dr. Yael Nevo-Caspi, is part of the clinical microbiology laboratory network led by Dr. Sharon Amit.
The global BSL3 standard establishes strict guidelines for handling and researching pathogens responsible for serious public health threats, including tuberculosis, brucellosis (Malta fever), Q fever, the Zika virus, and others. The standard requires special ventilation and filtration, protective gear, and work protocols to minimize risks to employees and the environment.
The unique facility at Sheba is built as a closed unit with three separate laboratories, equipped with a negative air pressure system and dedicated filters. Working in the facility requires wearing personal protective equipment, including a double gown, N95 mask, face shield, cap, and shoe covers. Waste disposal follows a strict protocol with double sterilization.
"This facility is another step in Sheba’s effort to be ready for any scenario and plays a key role in advancing research on dangerous pathogens. It opens the door to studies that weren’t possible before due to the lack of proper working conditions," says Dr. Nevo-Caspi. According to her, "Researchers at Sheba and beyond will have the opportunity to rent workspace in the facility and tap into the expertise of our skilled staff. This way, the center will play a role in both Sheba's clinical and research efforts while also helping to advance scientific research in Israel. We welcome everyone from the medical and research community, along with professionals in the medical, food, and biotech industries, to take advantage of our services.”
