Overview
The Breast Cancer Translational Research Laboratory has established and pursues a close collaboration between basic research scientists, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists, all committed to conduct advanced research in the field of breast cancer. The laboratory benefits from both, the strong clinical infrastructure of the Breast Cancer Institute and the state-of-the-art technological and scientific facilities available at the Sheba Cancer Research Center. The direct access to clinical databases and to biological samples, including a tissue-bank, facilitates relevant and significant translational research. The Breast Cancer Institute conducts many collaborations with scientists and bioinformaticians from Israel and from worldwide leading academic and medical institutes. The constant dialog between clinicians and scientists is the cornerstone of our advanced translational research laboratory.
Clinical observations lead to new directions of research, while novel findings can be readily translated into clinical trials. This integrated approach has the potential to bring personalized medicine to the forefront of patient care.
Research projects
Tumor Evolution: genomic and genetic studies
- Molecular and Genetic Profiling of Breast Cancer throughout the course of disease: from diagnosis, through therapy until recurrence.
- Whole genome sequencing of breast tumors – detecting divergence in mutational signatures.
- Emergence of mutations in estrogen receptor (ESR1) under hormonal therapy selection.
Resistance to therapy
- Mapping the chemoresistome in breast cancer: developing algorithms to map individual emergence of resistance to treatment from longitudinal whole transcriptome of serial samples (normal breast, pre-tretment and post-treatment). In collaboration with the bioinformatics unit in the G-INCPM at the Weizmann Institute of science.
- Protegenomics of resistance to chemotherapy: In collaboration with Prof. Tamar Geiger from Tel Aviv university.
- Predicting response to therapy by Ex-vivo organotypic culture (EVOC) models: Real time response prediction in collaboration with Dr. Ravid Straussman from the Weizmann Institute of Science and in collaboration with CuResponse company
- Predicting response to therapy by developing image-analysis based algorithms: estimate peri-tumor fluid velocity from MRI of breast tumors. A joint project with prof. Miri Sklair, head of the Breast Imaging Unit at Sheba and Dr. Arnaldo Mayer, head of the Computational Imaging Lab at Sheba.
Tumor and Gut microbiome
- Tumor microbiome and breast cancer: profiling the intra-tumor microbiome in breast cancer, in metastasis and in response to treatment and exploring its clinical significance. In collaboration with Dr. Ravid Straussman from Weizmann Institute of Science.
- Gut microbiome and breast cancer: a comprehensive profiling of gut microbiome in breast cancer and the related microbiome-induced metabolic and immune effects on breast carcinogenesis and therapy. In collaboration with Prof. Eran Segal from the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Tumor microenvironment and immune profiling
- Immune microenvironment in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) – characterizing the interplay between tumor infiltrating lymphocytes and various chemokines. In collaboration with prof. Adit Ben-Baruch from Tel Aviv university
- The clinical relevance of Cancer associated fibroblasts in breast cancer development and outcome. A collaboration with Dr. Ruthie Scherz-Shouval from Weizmann Institute of Science
