Weight-loss injections: not just for shedding pounds
Could Wegovy and Ozempic also help in treating heart disease, dementia, and more?
Wegovy, Ozempic, and other weight loss drugs have become particularly popular among individuals struggling with excess weight. However, alongside weight loss, preliminary studies indicate that these popular injections could represent a breakthrough in treating diseases such as dementia, Parkinson's, heart disease, fatty liver, and even slowing down aging processes. Additionally, the drug's effect on various addictions is also being researched.
Prof. Tali Zuckerman-Yaffe, head of the multidisciplinary diabetes treatment program at Sheba Medical Center, notes that the medications are based on very strong scientific evidence rather than accidental discoveries, and their beneficial effects have been demonstrated in numerous studies. However, she emphasizes that, like any medication, these drugs also have side effects and pose risks. Further studies are needed to understand their long-term effects.
