Therapeutic Greenhouse for Rehab Patients
A gardening "Greenhouse", a new form of therapy to assist in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients hospitalized has been inaugurated for psychiatric and rehabilitation patients at the Sheba Medical Center.
Gardening has long been known to be an effective therapy for improving motor function and upper extremity movement, coordination and balance, self image, and as a cognition treatment, for improved memory, and study capability, and social skills.
Treatment is offered on an individual basis or in group therapy for patients who have sustained neurological and orthopedic injuries, cranial injuries, and mental health problems.
The Sheba Medical Center "Rehabilitation Greenhouse" opened its doors recently. Its services are designed for patients being treated at the Rehabilitation Center or hospitalized in the Psychiatric Ward.
The project is part of the occupational therapy services and includes a beautifully designed "Rehabilitation Greenhouse" containing a wide variety of plants in planters and an exterior garden.
Treatment is offered by a professional staff from the occupation therapy clinic who have undergone training in this field, and is offered in a pleasant and supportive atmosphere.
The inauguration ceremony took place on March 30, 2004 at the Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer. Some of the dignitaries who took part in the ceremony were: Mrs. Ora Herzog, International President of the Council for a Beautiful Israel; Mr. Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, President of the Board of the Council for a Beautiful Israel; Mr. Eli Be'eri, CEO of the Council for a Beautiful Israel; and the management of the Sheba Medical Center.
