Los Angeles Friends of Sheba Award to Dr. Sarah Ferber

The Friends of Sheba Medical Center in Los Angeles recently awarded its 21st annual "Women of Achievement Award" to Dr. Sarah Ferber at a gala luncheon held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Sheba's Dr. Ferber is an internationally recognized leader in the area of regenerative medicine for treating diabetes. She was the first to demonstrate the possibility of using the liver for generating functional insulin-producing cells. Dr. Ferber holds a Ph.D. from the Technion (where she worked under Professors Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover, who received the Nobel Prize in 2004), and completed her post-doctoral studies at Harvard University.

Dr. Ferber's research has received $4 million in funding over the past eight years from the JDRF, the Israel Academy of Science and the D-Cure Foundation. She has received the Teva, Lindner, Rubin and Wolfson awards, among others, for this innovative research. She has mentored more than 30 graduates and post-doctorate students and physicians, and is a proud mother of three.

In the photo, Dr. Ferber is congratulated by Jack Saltzberg, Sheba Friends director in Los Angeles (at left) and Sheba director emeritus Prof. Mordechai Shani.
