Rare Fetus Surgery Performed Successfully

Prof. Eyal Schiff, head of Sheba's gynecology and maternity hospital, and his colleagues, performed an extrauterine, intrapartum surgery on a baby still attached to placenta outside the womb while the birth is in process. The rare, life-saving operation  on a mother in her 30th week of pregnancy was carried out because the fetus had a life-threatening blockage in his breathing passages. The procedure has only been tried a handful of times at select major Western hospitals, over the past decade.
