Dr. Ido Didi Fabian, a Sheba "Talpionnaire" ophthalmologist, was awarded for two groundbreaking research works he led in the field of ocular oncology.
Dr. Fabian's group, which also includes his mother, prof. Ina Fabian, and his sister in law, Dr. Osnat Ashur-Fabian, found in an in-vivo animal model that hypothyroidism is effective in prolonging survival in cases of metastatic ocular melanoma, an incurable and deadly disease. Their novel work, entitled "The Impact of Thyroid Hormone Levels on Survival in a Murine Model for Ocular Melanoma" was one of the winners in the Tel-Aviv university research fair 2014. According to Dr. Fabian, the findings of the group seem to "pave the way for clinical trials."
Dr. Fabian was also given the Claire and Amade Martie fund research grant for his work, entitled "A Biological Tissue Adhesive and Dissolvent System for Intraocular Tumor Plaque Radiotherapy," a novel surgical technique he developed and patented.
Dr. Fabian is about to leave to London for a two years fellowship in ocular oncology, after which he will join Dr. Vicky Dai at the ocular oncology service, the Goldschleger Eye Institute.
