Forty Years Later, Professor Gideon Paret reflects on his Journey Towards Becoming Director of Pediatric Intensive Care at Sheba.

20-11-2017

“My decision to become a doctor was a long, introspective process, after I had been let out after a long period of hospitalization when I was young.

While at med school in 1977, I joined the nursing staff of Sheba’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and was amazed by the care given to children in critical conditions as well as the beauty of the journey they take to reaching recovery. After my studies I spent my residency at a children’s hospital in Toronto.

During the Gulf War, I was one of the senior physicians of the department and by 2005 was appointed Director. It meant so much to be able to oversee the department in which I grew and developed and was happy to be given the chance to help shape the future generations of pediatric doctors in Israel.

I consider myself extremely lucky to get up every morning and be part of this department and take part in its mission. This department is home to me and I am grateful to the amazing staff for their contribution to the work we do here.  Even after forty years we are still strengthened when we see children arrive in a critical situation, finally open their eyes and look upon their mother.  It makes it all worth it to see children come back with their parents and thank us for helping them through their hard time.” - Dr. Gideon Paret.
