Human blood contains ~2,500 metabolites, of which nearly 1,000 are uncharacterized products of unknown human metabolism. Preliminary evidence implicates many of these in key metabolic processes, deeply impacting human health. Therefore, studying this metabolome holds the potential to uncover novel disease biochemistry as well as future drug targets and diagnostic markers. The Metabolomic Discovery Unit (MDU) at Sheba Medical Center led by Dr. Elgart, develops novel experimental and computational approaches to uncover functional associations between novel uncharacterized metabolites and various pathological conditions, focusing on cardiovascular disease (CVD). MDU aims to elucidate the chemical structures of these CVD-related unidentified metabolites as well as to uncover the enzymes responsible for the metabolism of these novel substances. This will expand our understanding of the disease biochemistry and etiology and enable the design of new metabolic panels that can be used in the clinic as diagnostic tools for CVD onset, progression, and prognosis. Finally, this will uncover a pool of novel cardiovascular enzymatic drug targets for clinical intervention.
