The Department for Eating Disorders in Children - Pediatric Department C - is the largest and oldest of its kind in Israel. Over the years, we have specialized in the compassionate treatment of disorders involving both body and mind. Today, our department serves as a dedicated hub for the treatment and research of eating disorders in teenagers (primarly female, but also male) from all across the country.
Our department accepts up to 21 female inpatients, aged 10-18, who can enjoy their stay in comfortable double or private rooms. Admission to the department is optional and requires a referral from community therapeutic professionals or other hospitalization systems.
The goal of hospitalization is to offer young girls, and their family members, cutting-edge medical and psychological treatment for a wide range of eating disorders. In parallel, it aims to prepare them for successful integration back into the community, including within their school environment.
How is treatment provided?
Treatments are based on a blend approach integrating medical, behavioral, emotional, nutritional and interpersonal rehabilitation modalities. Our comprehensive treatment team consists of highly specialized professionals who cater to a wide range of needs, and includes child and adolescent psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, speech therapists, nurses, dieticians, teachers, and social guides.
Psychological treatment includes individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy and movement therapy. Parents also participate in weekly group therapy, where they receive guidance on changing attitudes towards food and weight, and how to adapt the family's eating habits. The parents' group also discusses the emotional challenges that arise within the family due to the illness and hospitalization.
Every girl is accompanied by a dietitian who specializes in treating eating disorders.
Studies in the Department
We run a departmental class six days a week, led by professional teachers in various fields, and have a dedicated teacher with special skills in physical education for eating disorders. We stay in touch with the teenager's school during her hospitalization, offering support to bridge any educational gaps caused by the illness and even encouraging her to take the matriculation exams.
Research
Our department is affiliated with Tel Aviv University's Faculty of Medicine, and plays a vital role in educating diverse professionals and conducting research on eating disorders, psychosomatic disorders, and the mental aspects of physical illnesses.
