The pediatric rheumatology unit specializes in diagnosing and treating a range of autoimmune-rheumatic conditions, including childhood arthritis, lupus, and Mediterranean fever. Our aim is to achieve early and accurate diagnoses, tailor optimal treatments, and provide support to both the child and their family. We work closely with experts from various medical professions, such as dermatologists and nephrologists, to ensure comprehensive care. Additionally, for cases involving pain syndromes, we collaborate with the pain unit and rehabilitation department of Safra. Children in need of intravenous medication can receive it through day hospitalization.

The Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF)

The Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a hereditary disease that is commonly found among Jews, Arabs, and Druze, as well as other populations around the Mediterranean Sea. Sheba, located in Israel, has an impressive track record in treating and researching this condition. Our researchers at Sheba were the first to describe the characteristics of FMF in the world literature back in 1961. We also established the diagnostic criteria for the disease at our medical center, which are still widely used today. Thanks to our collaboration with the National Institute of Health in the United States, we have successfully identified the causative gene for FMF through the analysis of the treated families at Sheba Medical Center.

The unit offers continuous patient monitoring, conducts thorough clinical and genetic investigations, and provides a range of treatments for non-responsive patients, along with various research options. Genetic tests are carried out in the laboratory to diagnose and study FMF.

Rheumatology Ultrasound Clinic

The use of ultrasound in rheumatology has significantly advanced in the past decade as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Ultrasound complements physical examination by providing additional information on inflammatory processes in joints and tendons in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Additionally, we conduct precise steroid injections guided by ultrasound. The examination is performed by Dr. Rotem Samo, a graduate of the American School of Rheumatology.

Research Activity

We engage in extensive research activities, particularly in the field of rheumatology and international clinical trials of new medications, in collaboration with the Sheba Clinical Research Center. Our patients can participate in these clinical trials and benefit from advanced and innovative treatments for various rheumatic diseases.
