The Pediatric Neurosurgery Unit provides specialized care for pediatric patients with a range of conditions, including head and spinal cord injuries, brain tumors and hemorrhages, congenital spine and spinal cord diseases, craniosynostosis, hydrocephalus, cerebrovascular diseases, and epileptic movement disorders.
The unit's team comprises neurologists and pediatric neurosurgeons collaborating with various specialists at Sheba, including neuro-oncologists, neurologists, endocrinologists, neuropsychologists, oncologists, nuclear medicine specialists, plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial specialists, and movement disorder specialists. Many of them have received training from renowned centers in the US and Europe. With extensive experience and expertise, this dedicated team conducts numerous surgeries annually using state-of-the-art equipment.
In the unit, endoscopic procedures are also performed, using innovative equipment such as an optical system that is only a few millimeters in size. This system includes probes measuring up to two millimeters, which are inserted into different spaces in the brain with tiny tools and miniature systems for intracranial pressure measurement, cerebral oxygenation, and temperature monitoring after head injury. This allows for operations to be performed in deep brain areas while reducing the risk of tissue damage.
The unit serves as a national center, the largest of its kind in the country, for the treatment of Moyamoya disease - a rare chronic condition characterized by severe narrowing of the cerebral blood vessels, leading to reduced blood flow and resulting in cerebral ischemia (damage to brain tissue). The unit performs surgical procedures for the disease, and a comprehensive rehabilitation team consisting of neurologists and neurosurgeons provides long-term support to patients.
Furthermore, the unit possesses extensive expertise in the country in the implantation of pacemakers and vagal nerve stimulators - electrical devices that are surgically implanted under the skin to deliver electrical pulses to the brain through the vagus nerve. These devices are utilized for the treatment of epilepsy and treatment-resistant depression.
Effective from September 1, 2023, insured individuals from all health funds in the country are eligible to undergo neurosurgical procedures at Sheba Medical Center.
