The Department of Hemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplants is an integral part of our array of services for pediatric hemato-oncology and bone marrow transplants. We specialize in the treatment of blood cancer, malignancies, and other hematological diseases. Our mission is to provide hospitalized children with cutting-edge and innovative treatments, including immunotherapy and CAR-T. Additionally, we manage clinical studies and experimental treatments approved by the hospital's ethics committee for research approval.
Our department has a total of 19 rooms, offering a mix of single rooms and double rooms (for chemotherapy and supportive care).
Our team
The department's staff is committed to providing professional and compassionate care to patients and their families. Doctors and nurses are in the ward at all hours of the day. Each day, a team of five doctors, including at least two senior doctors and a specialist in bone marrow transplants, examines the children, draws up a daily treatment plan, and discusses it with parents. Given the complexity of the diseases, they work closely with a multidisciplinary team of experts, including infectious disease specialists, radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, urologists, nephrologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons.
The ward nurses play a vital role as partners in the treatment plan decisions. They implement the program in practice by administering medication, training patients and parents, and communicating important information to the attending doctor. All of them possess academic degrees and have undergone comprehensive training, that includes technical skills and information transfer in the field of paediatric haemato-oncology. Around half of them have completed a foundational oncology course.
Another team works in the department for the welfare of the patient and his family members, such as a clinical pharmacist, a social worker, psychologists, educational staff and service girls. The clinical pharmacist, employed on a full-time basis, works closely with the nurses and medical staff and supervises the entire pharmacological field; The social worker is responsible for safeguarding the rights of the child and his family regarding his illness and assesses his needs and the support he needs.
Another departmental team is dedicated exclusively to ensuring the welfare of patients and their families. This includes a clinical pharmacist, a social worker, psychologists, educational staff, and National Service personnel. The full-time clinical pharmacist works closely with nurses and medical staff, overseeing all aspects of the pharmacological domain. Meanwhile, the social worker ensures the rights of the child and their family are protected, assessing their needs and providing vital support in a friendly and caring manner.
The psychologists offer emotional care and parental guidance to both the child and their family. The educational staff, consisting of dedicated teachers, provides age-appropriate education and support within the department's framework. They maintain regular communication with the community's education system, allowing hospitalized children to take exams, including matriculation, and participate in enrichment classes. The National Service personnel, representing various non-profit organizations, spend around 16 hours a day in the ward. They engage with the children, keeping them in good spirits, and offer assistance to parents whenever possible.
Infection Prevention
The department is equipped with an air conditioning system featuring specialized filters and positive air pressure, designed to minimize environmental contamination. Similar to operating rooms, the ward has a PVC floor that promotes infection control due to its flexibility and easy-to-clean properties. Additionally, there are no adjacent panels which could potentially harbor bacteria and pose cleaning challenges.
We provide a variety of services to support the wellbeing of patients and their families. Our amenities include a handy central kitchen, a cozy parents' and guests' corner, a fun playroom, and a dedicated classroom. Each room is thoughtfully equipped with a convertible sofa next to the child's bed, along with a TV, computer, toilet, and shower. Our aim is to create a welcoming and inviting environment that caters to everyone's needs.
