Dr. Avshalom Leibowitz is the Head of the Department of Internal Medicine D (Pnimit Dalet) and serves as a senior physician in the Hypertension Unit at Sheba Medical Center. Dr. Leibowitz is an expert in Internal Medicine and Hypertension.
His main research is focused on the deleterious effects of western diet components (salt and fructose) on the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome and hypertension.
For their experiments Dr. Leibowitz and his team use usually two animals models: 1. Salt induced hypertension 2. High fructose induced metabolic syndrome. In addition, they conduct cell culture experiments in high fructose and high salt conditions.
Recently they revealed some new data that can be taken toward a totally new approach how to deal with these pathologies. they found that melatonin can modulates the immune system in order to prevent salt induced hypertension. they also found a new metabolic pathway involved in fructose induced obesity and diabetes.
