The Brain and Spinal Catheter Unit at Sheba diagnoses and treats the following indications using catheterization:
● Cerebral aneurysms
● Spinal arteriovenous malformation - this refers to a range of abnormalities that can affect the spinal cord. These malformations can be treated by injecting biological adhesives, similar to the procedures performed on the brain.
● Arteriovenous malformations (AVM)
● Stroke
● Tumors located in the brain, head, and neck region can pose a significant risk during surgical removal due to their abundant blood supply. To ensure safe and effective tumor removal, patients undergo a preoperative catheterization procedure involving selective embolization. This technique blocks the blood supply to the tumors, allowing for their safe extraction. The procedure involves the use of catheters that are carefully navigated to the tumor site, where special particles or concentrated alcohol are injected to close off the tumor's vascular bed.
Our unit's team uses advanced technology to achieve precise rendering, including 3D, of the medical condition. This ensures accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for patients.
Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive endovascular procedures or microsurgery, after consulting and discussing with our multidisciplinary team. Our team includes specialists in surgery, endovascular neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, neurology, stroke, trauma, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery.
