The Department of Geriatric Rehabilitation A welcomes patients from various departments in the Sheba Medical Center and beyond. Our goal is to restore our patients to their maximum level of functioning and independence, whether it’s fractures, strokes, surgeries, or prolonged hospitalizations that have led to the functional decline.

Our department endeavors to deliver high-quality and safe patient care through a multidisciplinary team. This team manages the medical, functional, and mental aspects of patient care with a holistic approach. Treatment takes into account the patient's immediate, chronic, and potential needs, along with their permanent environment in the community and social resources.

Our team strives to identify and address common geriatric syndromes in the elderly, offering solutions, preventive care, and training to promote health and wellbeing. The department's multidisciplinary team comprises geriatric and internal medicine specialists, qualified nurses, academics with foundational training in geriatrics and additional expertise, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, a social worker, a psychologist, a nutritionist, and a clinical pharmacist.

A significant focus of our team's work is ensuring patients and their families are well-prepared for continuing treatment after leaving the ward. We assist in coordinating suitable housing adjustments, auxiliary equipment, and more, tailored to the patient's level of functioning.  Our staff works closely with HMOs to provide continuity of medical and rehabilitation care in an ambulatory setting, whether that is the patient's home, physiotherapy institute at the HMO, or day hospitalization.

In the past few years, we've introduced a therapeutic apartment to help patients practice functional tasks needed for home functioning. We've also incorporated virtual reality systems and iPads to enhance motor function. Additionally, our department holds a weekly geriatric clinic to monitor patients following their discharge and conduct geriatric assessments for patients referred from different settings.

We see great importance in providing emotional support to patients and their families through psychological, spiritual, and social services. The department offers support groups for patients' families, led by a charge nurse and departmental psychologist.

Our department's activities also involve academic engagement, drawing from the latest professional literature, as well as teaching interns, medical students, nursing, and paramedical professionals.
