The Clinic for diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders, in conjunction with the otolaryngology department, head and neck surgery, the communication disorders service, and the nutrition and diet service, is here to help with an array of reasons that cause difficulties in swallowing.
A swallowing problem is defined as difficulty in moving food and/or liquids from the mouth to the stomach. These difficulties can lead to a decline in nutrition, dehydration, food entering the respiratory tract and lungs (aspirations), and even pneumonia. Occasionally, a decrease in quality of life becomes apparent and voice production issues (dysphonia) may also be observed.
Diagnosis and treatment are made by a multi-professional team, which includes an otolaryngologist, nurse, communication therapist and dietician. This enables us to perform a comprehensive assessment of the swallowing mechanism clinically and radiographically.
