Pain in cancer patients can stem from the disease itself or medical treatment. In most cases, the pain is persistent, often accompanied by various types of pain related to different factors. Pain is a complex phenomenon, with physical, emotional, and social aspects. The overall experience of pain significantly impacts quality of life and the ability to lead a normal routine.

The Oncology Pain Treatment unit offers support to individuals experiencing pain that hasn't been alleviated by medication from the family doctor or oncologist.  The clinic team cares for patients treated at Sheba and other hospitals, at every point of the illness - from diagnosis, through treatment, to recovery. Treatment choices are varied, ranging from drug therapy via infusion and nerve block to radio waves, spinal pacing, and referrals to pain rehabilitation, and more..

Our team collaborates closely with a neurologist, orthopedic oncologist, neurosurgeon, radiation oncologists, and an extensive support team.

The unit’s team continuously engages in medical education for healthcare professionals at the hospital and in the community. They participate in conferences and courses in Israel and worldwide. Additionally, the team is involved in research on innovation and new technologies for oncology pain management, clinical studies, and developing an app to monitor symptoms and side effects.

Additional services

  • Psychological treatment using the CBT modality for patients recovering from cancer who suffer from pain - referrals accepted from outside Sheba.
  • Cognitive oncology occupational therapy - referrals accepted from outside Sheba.
  • Motor oncology occupational therapy - referrals accepted from outside Sheba.
  • Opioid detox clinic - exclusively for Sheba patients.

The admission process in the unit

After registering with the secretary, you'll wait for the examination by a nurse and/or doctor. In the unit's meeting, they'll discuss your medical history, perform a physical examination, and send you for any tests you might need. After that, you’ll receive a treatment plan with plenty of available slots.

The admission process for treatment in the pain relief system

Treatments take place in the pain relief system at the outpatient clinics. For each treatment, you should: 1. Bring Form 17 specifically for this treatment. 2. Be accompanied by someone over the age of 18.

Before any treatment, we will ask a few questions about your medical condition and ask you to change into a hospital gown.  For some procedures, medication is given via intravenous infusion. After the treatment, you'll move to a recovery room for a short rest, after which you can be discharged home with a family member/friend by your side.

A little patience goes a long way

Several factors, including medical urgency, influence the order of admission to the unit. Your understanding and patience are greatly appreciated. Please note that visits are for adults only; we kindly request that children under 12 do not accompany you.
