The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care department serves all children requiring hospitalization for cardiac reasons. The department consists of the intensive care unit with 8 intensive care beds, an intermediate unit with 4-6 beds with the capacity to receive ventilated patients when needed, and 6 hospitalization rooms with 1-2 beds per room.
In the ward, Israeli children are hospitalized alongside Palestinian children, children from Iraq, Nigeria, Cyprus, Slovenia and more, who have undergone complex heart surgeries and heart catheterizations. Also, children referred from the cardiology clinics and the emergency medicine department (Pediatric ER) are hospitalized. Babies and children who need extracorporeal support (Extracorporeal Membranous Oxygenator - ECMO) due to heart failure are also hospitalized in our department.
Within our department, we are fortunate to have three distinguished senior doctors who specialize in pediatrics and pediatric intensive care. The department's staff are committed to integrating innovative technologies and approaches into their clinical practice, teaching, and research. Our staff also takes an active part in the training of pediatric interns and medical students, and serves as a sought-after experience center for nursing staff in advanced training courses.
The National ECMO School, an integral part of our department, is run by a team of skilled medical and nursing staff who also serve as instructors in this exceptional course. The ECMO service, led by the director of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care department, is a member of ELSO, The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization.
Our department also uses a website authorized by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for the purpose of training and education of medical staff members (doctors, nurses, paramedics) in Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS) courses.
