The Spine Diseases and Surgery Unit at Sheba Medical Center leads its field in Israel. The unit's team offers comprehensive and thorough care for the diagnosis and treatment of various spine conditions, including:

  • Surgeries and treatments for degenerative spinal diseases (such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, etc.)
  • Surgeries to remove tumors from the spinal column, including metastases to the spine and primary tumors
  • Surgeries to remove tumors from the spinal canal (intradural) such as meningioma or schwannoma neurinoma
  • Surgeries to remove tumors from the spinal cord (intramedullary) such as astrocytoma or ependymoma.
  • Spinal cord trauma - fractures and dislocations of the spine from injury
  • Spinal stabilization in the elderly population (fracture of the vertebra)
  • Radiosurgery for spinal tumors (high-dose, single-session radiation)

These surgeries are performed along the entire spine (from the skull to the pelvis) using a range of sophisticated approaches:

  • Fixation of the head and neck and upper cervical vertebrae.
  •  Anterior neck surgeries: These surgeries release pressure from the spinal cord and nerves and stabilize the spinal column.
  • Posterior neck surgeries: These surgeries relieve pressure from the spinal cord or nerves and, in appropriate cases, stabilize the vertebrae.
  • Lateral or thoracic spine access surgeries: These surgeries are performed to release pressure caused by a herniated disc or growth on the spinal cord.
  • Posterior or lateral surgeries for the lumbar spine: These surgeries are performed in cases of disc ruptures, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and removal of spinal growths. Nerves are released, and if necessary, the spinal column is stabilized.
  • Lumbar spine fixation surgeries through the abdominal cavity: These surgeries involve stabilization of the vertebrae through an anterior approach.
  • Minimally invasive procedures: These surgeries can involve discectomy, spinal decompression, and stabilization of the vertebrae, all with small incisions, minimal damage to the surrounding muscles, short hospital stays, and mild pain.

Our diagnoses, surgeries, and treatments are conducted utilizing state-of-the-art technological equipment, renowned globally for its excellence. Electrophysiological monitoring is employed during certain surgeries.  Spine surgeries for babies and children are performed collaboratively by Dr. Zeev Feldman and Dr. Jacob Zauberman from the pediatric neurosurgery unit.
