Radiotherapy uses focused and high-powered X-rays to destroy non-cancerous and cancerous tumours, along with congenital vascular malformations in the brain and spinal cord. Additionally, it is used to alleviate severe facial pain caused by nerve issues (trigeminal neuralgia).
The radiation is aimed at the target with hundreds of beams coming from different positions in space. This focused radiation precisely targets the intended area without impacting nearby regions. Usually, the procedure is a one-time treatment without requiring anaesthesia, incisions, hospital stays, or rehabilitation.
The Radiosurgery Unit at Sheba was established by Dr. Roberto Spiegelman in 1992, making it the first in the Middle East. Today, it is recognised as one of the most experienced centres in the field - delivering over 400 treatments annually and having treated over 7,000 patients to date. Its multi-professional team works in collaboration with various experts at Sheba, including neurosurgeons, oncologists and neuroradiologists.
