For the sixth consecutive year, the Sheba’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (premature infants) has been chosen by the Ministry of Health as an exceptional neonatal unit, recognized for its quality indicators such as infection rate, infrastructure, personnel, and more. Sheba's leadership in preterm care is a testament to its commitment to maintaining the highest standards.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sheba, renowned for its expertise, is at the forefront of providing exceptional care for premature infants. It is distinguished by the largest number of twins and triplets in the country. Our team manages a wide range of cases, including very low birth weight premature babies, infants with complex birth defects (such as brain, chest, lung, heart, kidney, urinary tract, intestinal, orthopedic, and spinal defects), as well as infectious diseases and both common and rare metabolic disorders.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) aims to create ideal conditions for the optimal development of newborns. A crucial element contributing to this is the active involvement of parents. The NICU strongly advocates for the full participation of parents throughout the hospitalization period, recognizing the importance of parental empowerment. Parents play an integral role in the hospitalization process, and their engagement, presence, and physical connection with the infant are vital for both the parents and the newborn.

Our departmental team comprises paediatric specialists, neonatologists, nursing experts, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a psychologist, a speech and language therapist, a pharmacist, and a dietitian.

Our team actively engages in diverse clinical studies and collaborates with various centers worldwide, including the esteemed Weizmann Institute in Israel. Additionally, a dedicated basic research laboratory exists within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The daughter of Shir and Guy Shinfeld arrived in the world at week 28, making her a preemie for quite some time. The parents describe the turbulent experience and the empowering feeling they brought home with them.
