Department of Vascular Surgery

The department provides medical care to treats patients with vascular diseases affecting arteries and veins. Our team performs vascular surgeries, invasive endovascular treatments, and administers drug therapies. In addition to our surgical activities, our department also operates a vascular institute for non-invasive diagnosis of vascular diseases, offers specialist clinics, and provides student teaching.

Procedures performed in the department

We provide a range of open and bypass surgeries, including:

●    Acute and chronic Arterial Occlusion in the upper or lower extremities
●    Aneurysm repair in the aorta and peripheral arteries
●    Carotid endarterectomy
●    Aortic arch arteries
●    Arterial blockage to the kidneys or intestines
●    Arteriovenous fistula or graft creation for hemodialysis
●    Thoracoscopic sympathectomy for excessive sweating in the hands
●    Varicose veins 

Endovascular surgeries

The department specializes in performing endovascular surgeries, utilizing catheterization methods to treat complex aneurysms in various regions of the body. The department boasts a "hybrid room", a spacious operating room with an advanced X-ray device, that seamlessly integrates open surgical procedures with endovascular technology. Treatments include:

1. Abdominal aorta aneurysms with stent grafting.

2. Complex juxtarenal aortic aneurysms with fenestrated stent grafting.

3. Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms with branched stent grafting.

4. Treatment of popliteal artery aneurysms with "coated" supports.

Combined surgical/ endovascular activity

In partnership with the Invasive Radiology Unit and the X-ray Institute, the Department of Vascular Surgery conducts procedures and treatments utilizing a percutaneous approach, commonly known as "catheterization". We provide the following treatments:

● Catheterization of blood vessels in the lower limbs, dilation or occlusion of blood vessels using balloon angioplasty and stenting
●    Arterial aneurysms in the spleen and intestinal arteries
●    Strictures and blockage in dialysis fistulas
●    Recurrent narrowing in the internal carotid artery following angioplasty (Restenosis). 

Drug treatments

●    Fibrinolytic (thrombolytic) therapy to dissolve acute and subacute blood clots in arteries and bypass grafts.
●    Vasodilatory therapy (iloprost) for peripheral small artery blockages 

Teaching activity

The department is dedicated to providing instruction to groups of medical students from Tel Aviv University and the University of London-Cyprus, and welcomes individual students who come as part of their "electives" program.

Research activity

The department's staff participates in various and diverse clinical studies designed to develop new drugs and technology in the field of vascular disease treatment. The team of doctors is active in publishing articles in leading medical journals in the field of vascular surgery.
