Technology for restoring balance, movement abilities and function

A set of exercises within the Virtual Reality system can assist in the rehabilitation of movement disorders, posture, walking, and balance issues.

The Virtual Reality system at Sheba, CAREN, is one of the most advanced systems in the world and the only one of its kind in Israel. Similar systems have been adopted by the American, Canadian and Dutch military and in leading research laboratories.

The system is built on virtual reality technology and offers treatment in an immersive space, using a computerized environment that challenges balance, movement, and spatial perception in an accurate and fun way.

How It Works?

The system consists of hardware and software components, featuring a 360-degree screen and a platform where the patient can stand or walk. The patient's movement is recorded by the movement sampling system using 18 infrared cameras which follow passive markers on the patient's body. The recorded movement is transmitted in real time to a central computer which projects a virtual video scene on a large screen located 360˚ around the patient.

The system responds to patient movements by encouraging sensory feedback (visual, auditory, and proprioceptive), providing patients with an opportunity to work on movement strategies, balance, agility, coordination, muscle strengthening, walking pattern improvement, and more.

The therapists build a series of different scenarios for the patient to engage with: walking on a flat surface, uphill and downhill, overcoming obstacles, driving or sailing. Performance is recorded and the treatment’s achievements and progress can be compared.
